State Representative Melanie Miller of Ashland has proposed legislation to recognize the 6888th Central Post Battalion, an all-Black women’s unit that served in World War II. The bill, titled House Bill 204, is co-sponsored by Representative Erika White from Toledo. It seeks to designate March 9th annually in Ohio to honor the battalion's service.

Miller stated: "I’m honored to be introducing this legislation that will recognize these women and sacrifices they endured, serving overseas in a conflict to support thousands of troops on the frontlines in Europe during World War II."

The 6888th Central Post Battalion included 855 Black women tasked with sorting millions of pieces of mail in the European Theater of WWII, estimated to require six months. They completed the mission in three months, boosting troop morale significantly.

The bill is currently awaiting assignment to a committee for further consideration.
