The Ohio Senate has passed Senate Bill 144, which authorizes certified and registered pharmacy technicians to administer immunizations. This new legislation includes providing immunization services to children as young as five, lowering the previous age limit from seven.

State Senator Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario), who chairs the Medicaid Committee and is a member of the Health Committee, supported the bill. "Ohioans deserve the opportunity to access medical treatment that is convenient and safe," said Romanchuk. "Allowing these highly trained medical providers the ability to simply do their jobs will ensure our children grow up in happy, healthy, and safe environments."

Senate Bill 144 stipulates several requirements for pharmacy technicians:

- They must work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

- They must complete a course in the administration of immunizations.

- They must receive and maintain certification to perform basic life-support procedures.

- They must practice in accordance with protocols that meet various requirements established under existing law.

The bill now awaits the Governor's signature.
