The Ohio Senate has passed legislation sponsored by State Senator Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario) and State Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) aimed at providing additional support for families with disabled children. Senate Bill 176 will enable courts to issue, update, or extend child support orders for individuals over 18 years old who have a disability.

"It is essential for children and adults with disabilities to receive family support for their overall well-being," Romanchuk stated. "This simple update will give families the ability to continue their loving care of their children and help countless Ohioans receive the care they may need throughout their entire lives."

According to data, 645,000 Ohio children have at least one type of disability, with 22.2% of all Ohio's kids having an intellectual or developmental disability. Additionally, 34.5% of children in the Buckeye State require specialized health care.

Senate Bill 176 will now move to the Ohio House for consideration.
