Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash in Knox County

Wayne Township - The Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Monday, September 26, 2022 at approximately 8:15 AM, on Green Valley Road east of Mile Creek Road in Wayne Township, Knox County.

Emma West, age 18, of Fredericktown, Ohio, was operating a black 2011 Chevrolet Cruze eastbound on Green Valley Road when she struck a horse-drawn cart, that was also traveling eastbound.

Ms. West’s vehicle continued off the right side of the roadway, overturned and struck a tree. The horse-drawn cart was occupied by Andy Schwartz, age 18, Joel Schwartz, age 20, and Amus Schwarz, age 21, all of Fredericktown, Ohio.

Ms. West was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at the scene. Amus Schwartz was transported to Knox Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ms. West was wearing a seat-belt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol and drugs of abuse are not suspected factors in the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Fredericktown Fire/EMS, Mount Vernon Fire/EMS and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

The traffic crash remains under investigation by the Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
