State Representative Melanie Miller was honored with the Voice for Change Award by the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence during its Annual Advocacy Day at the Ohio Statehouse, according to an April 24 announcement. The award recognizes Miller’s work on the forthcoming Safe Homes Act, bipartisan legislation aimed at helping survivors of sexual and domestic violence leave unsafe housing without financial penalties.

The recognition highlights ongoing legislative efforts in Ohio to support victims of abuse and ensure their safety. The Safe Homes Act would allow survivors to terminate leases early if they have experienced sexual or domestic violence, with the bill expected to be introduced soon.

“It is an honor to receive this award as we continue to work through the Safe Homes Act to ensure that Ohio victims in dangerous situations are protected and can find safety,” said Rep. Miller. “I want to commend OAESV’s important advocacy efforts and appreciate their partnership on this legislation.”

Miller also discussed House Bill 723, known as Trey’s Law, which she jointly introduced with State Representative Roy Klopfenstein. The bill seeks to prevent child victims of sexual abuse from being silenced by nondisclosure or confidentiality agreements by declaring such agreements void and unenforceable if they prohibit speaking about abuse. “Trey’s Law ensures that those who commit abuse cannot rely on any kind of legal loopholes to escape accountability,” said Miller. “Our responsibility is to protect children, to stand for transparency and to allow survivors to share their stories without fear of repercussions.”

Miller has served as a state representative for the 67th House District covering Ashland and Medina counties, chaired several legislative committees including Arts, Athletics and Tourism, Health, Technology and Innovation, as well as Children and Human Services committees according to her official website. She has provided public service in Ashland and Medina counties both as a legislator and community leader according to her official website. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in communication and digital media from Cleveland State University according to her official website.

In addition, Miller leads various legislative committees, holds a leadership role at a community health organization, remains active in local civic groups, is married to Matt Miller—the mayor of Ashland—and previously received the Ashland County Women of Achievement Award according to her official website.

OAESV continues its advocacy for comprehensive responses for survivors while working with legislators like Miller toward policies aimed at preventing sexual violence.
