State Representative Melanie Miller and Assistant Minority Leader Representative Dontavius L. Jarrells presented sponsor testimony to the House Arts, Athletics and Tourism Committee regarding the establishment of the Ohio Sports Commission. This commission aims to attract, promote, and develop national and international sporting events in Ohio.

Representative Miller emphasized the economic significance of tourism in Ohio, stating, “Tourism is a $56 billion industry in Ohio and sports have a crucial role in driving that success.” She added that the creation of the commission would strengthen Ohio’s economy and elevate its national and global presence.

Ohio has previously hosted successful sporting events, including the 2021 NFL Draft in Cleveland, which generated $42 million in economic impact, and the 2024 MLS All-Star Game with a $30 million impact. Cincinnati’s professional sports contribute over $550 million annually. The proposed commission seeks to build on these achievements.

The commission will include 17 members: representatives from state government, political parties, student and professional athlete organizations, convention bureaus, local sports commissions, private stakeholders in sports or tourism industries, and athletes from Ohio.

Its responsibilities will include promoting sports tourism by collaborating with private and public stakeholders to bring major sporting events to Ohio. Additionally, it will conduct a study for a new grant program aimed at supporting emerging sports. The study’s findings will guide policy recommendations to position Ohio as a leading destination for sporting events at all levels.

House Bill 255 is pending further hearings in the House Arts, Athletics and Tourism Committee.
