State Representative Melanie Miller of Ashland has cast her vote in favor of Senate Concurrent Resolution 5. This resolution calls on President Trump to endorse the Ohio Department of Medicaid’s request for implementing work requirements for Medicaid expansion recipients.
“This resolution ensures that Medicaid is available for those who need it, while also encouraging workforce requirements for able-bodied adults. Providing a path out of government dependence will help restore dignity and purpose for Ohioans,” said Miller.
The Ohio Department of Medicaid submitted this request to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in February. If approved, starting January 1, 2026, individuals must meet at least one criterion to enroll in Medicaid Group VIII services. These criteria include being at least fifty-five years old, employed, enrolled in school or an occupational training program, participating in an alcohol and drug addiction treatment program, or having intensive physical health care needs or serious mental illness.
The initiative aims to encourage employment and education, reducing reliance on Medicaid services over time and aiding job fulfillment and prosperity among Ohioans. Currently, there are 144,792 jobs available in Ohio, with 93,389 offering salaries over $50,000.
With the resolution now adopted, the Ohio Department of Medicaid is awaiting a decision from the Federal Government regarding the waiver’s approval or denial.
